LISTENING TO:

*Tom Petty: No Second Thoughts
This strange, lonesome acoustic tune w/its congos & hints of sitar reminds me of the first time I came to LA w/my band the Solid Goldsteins to play a couple of shows back in the early 90s. A lot of Petty’s stuff does sound so LA, right?…

*Henry Mancini: Fallout
A three minute masterpiece from the master. Killer stuff. The arrangement does my head in.

SET LIST & NOTES FROM 11/29 SHOW:

*Random cool incident of the nite:
Some patron dropping five bucks on the table at the foot of the stage on his way out. Cold hard cash is always cool.

*Quote of the nite:
“Do you play at Largo?”
“No. They won’t have me”
“That’s crazy. I’ll get you in there.”

Hilarious…

Cool to have an extended set, as Carol-Ann had the nite off and I could play into her set time. A couple guys there were asking me why I don’t play Largo and I was telling them, Largo won’t touch me with a 10 foot pole. It’s kinda funny, I do get asked that question on a regular basis. Also, same thing with KCRW. Anyway, the set ended w/a request by the guys from Delarosa (the band that plays the 10:30 slot every Tues). They wanted to hear the Oasis b-side “Talk Tonite”, (which has been in & out of my set for years). I managed to remember all the lyrics & the boys from Delarosa were singing harmonies (from the bar) at the end of the tune. It was all good. Visit Delarosa online here: www.delarosamusic.com

On a technical note: I was playing my “Kay” guitar (the one in the “Good To Know” video & on the cover of “Good Luck Stranger”), since my Martin’s pickup went down the previous week. The Kay is a cool looking, inexpensive vintage guitar and sounded pretty good, though not nearly as forgiving to play compared to my Martin. But it was good to have it out for the nite as I hadn’t gigged with it in years.

*CHAV! A Users Guide To Britain’s New Ruling Class

My good friend Clive, a true Londoner, who lets me crash at his Muswell Hill flat, wouldn’t let me leave without this book on my summer visit to the UK to do the IPO show in Liverpool. Chavs are everywhere in Britain. Heck, I even spotted some in Mexico, of the Mexican variety. It’s some kind of underclass revolution. Best quote I heard firsthand regarding chavs was my friend Mark’s aunt in Liverpool talking about chavs and her 16 year old daughter: “I’m afraid she’s a chav in training.” Hilarious. Not sure what a chav is? Here’s a website to help:

Welcome To The Holidays Set

I think there were 5 people in the bar when I got there to set up, that includes Kelly-Ann, the bartender. December gigs can be slow going, especially early in the night. By the time I started, the number had barely doubled, so it was a pretty quiet, laid-back set, nearly all covers. By the end, the Delarosa boys had showed up (earlier than usual) and I did a few requests for them.

Set List:

Half The World Away (Oasis cover)

Come Along & Thrill Us

You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away (request/Beatles cover)

Who Am I (What’s My Name)? (Snoop Dogg cover)

Angeles (request/Elliott Smith cover)

Talk Tonight (request/Oasis cover)

Welcome To The Holidays Set, pt 2

Another slow Tues, December nite. Not surprising. Probably half a dozen or so folks there when I started my set, probably double that by the end. Set still felt decent, though, if a tad on the lonely side. I should’ve dusted off my old Goldstein tune: Empty Bars. Though I guess I’ll save that for when it really is empty…

Set List:

Half The World Away (Oasis cover)

Girl (Beatles cover)

Come Along & Thrill Us

Houston

Who Am I (What’s My Name)? (request/Snoop Dogg cover)

Ordinary Song
