Return to Residency, Wired Magazine, 999, Tedy Bruschi, etc …

Tues, Oct 25

LISTENING TO:

*50 Cent: Outta Control (remix)
Those lonely, resigned piano chords, those climbing strings, so hypnotizing. Addicted to this wistful & haunting downtempo club track.

*The Vines: Highly Evolved
94 seconds of flawlessly lean rock and roll.

*Keith Richards: 999
From his 2nd solo record, Main Offender, which I almost wore out when it came out in ‘92. (btw: 999 is what you dial in the UK in an emergency). Had the good fortune to meet Tim Hatfield while I was just in NYC, who engineered on this record. A real treat to get the inside scoop on the making of this album while hanging out in Tim’s studio, Cowboy Technical Services.

It’s true. Check it out:

The folks from the ad agency have now sent me a copy of the ad. It’s pretty cool. I’ll try and find a place to put it so you can stream it if you want.

“Thank you, Lisbon!”

Also, I get a mention in a related story in Wired Magazine’s online edition here:

WELCOMING BACK:
*Tedy Bruschi, New England Patriots

As I wrote about in this very space a few months back, Tedy was out for the season because of a mild stroke he suffered days after winning the Superbowl. Well, thanks to a speedier recovery than anyone expected, he was cleared fully by his doctors to return to the practice field, which he did this past Wednesday. Tedy is special player. They don’t have stats for guys like him, who have a knack for making momentum changing plays at key times in big games. Welcome back, Tedy!

SPOTTED IN FIRST CLASS:
James Lipton. That’s right. The adulatory host of “Inside the Actors Studio” on the JFK to LAX flight. Wanted to tell him my favorite curse word.

ROOTING FOR:
The Astros. Hopefully they can turn this thing around in Minute Maid Park with the able arm of Roy Oswalt.

XM RADIO
As many of you know, tracks from Lone Star are among the most played on XM’s Radio Unsigned program. Feel free to email Billy Zero @ unsigned@xmradio.com and request me.

Don’t forget, my whole catalog (practically) is available at digital download sites everywhere. Thanks again for the sales!

UB&G
Oct 25, 2005 - World Series set

This was the World Series set. I started my set during the 8th inning, was coaxed into playing “Sunday Shining” in the 9th an effort to help the Astros, but they were doomed. The fact that you could see Barbara Bush’s face in the crowd behind home plate on every pitch, and the bad karma & vibes her image brings that was being beamed to TV sets all over the world, was clearly more than the Astros could overcome. But who could blame them? That’s a nearly insurmountable handicap to conquer. Bud Selig should also have been booted out of the park for his biased & hateful refusal to close the roof, thus effectively nullifying the Astros home field advantage. At the end of the 9th, I played “Houston” for the hometown boys, feeling the usual ending was a foregone conclusion. All in all, a strange but memorable return to my UB&G residency. My set was peppered w/some improvised hanging background chords & figures for many full count situations.

Quote of nite:
“You talk like a baritone, sing like a Beatle”

Random cool incident of the nite:
Somebody walking to the stage after my set as I’m putting my stuff away and handing me a $5 bill saying: “You sounded great, I’m sorry the baseball game was on.”

Good crowd again. Steven Wilson of Plasticsoul dropped by and supplied a few requests. (On a sidenote, I think when Steven performs solo as Plasticsoul, he should change the spelling to Plasticsole. That would be cool & informative). I wore my Patriots jersey to honor Tom Brady’s performance on Monday Nite Football, despite the loss. Also sold some CDs, so that was cool.
