Another Show THIS Tuesday @ UB&G

Hey Folks,

I’ll be holding court again this Tuesday nite at the Universal Bar & Grill, which is indeed located on the banks of the mighty LA River. My set will again be @ 8:30 just before the lovely & talented Carol-Ann Plante takes the stage @ 9:30. This gig may turn into a semi-regular thing for the foreseeable future. I may do some more ukulele stuff as well.
Thanks to all who made it by last week.

Oh, yeah. Some pics online here from last show….(Thanks, Stephanie!)

LISTENING TO:

*Danny O’Keefe: Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues
Often covered by the likes of Willie, Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Rich, et al, this hit version by the songwriter himself is my favorite. Heck, this version of his own song is really a cover version in a way, since a non-hit, sub-par version (w/flutes!) of “Good Time Charlie” appeared on his debut record, little over one year before he re-recorded it & included it on his second album.

*Tupac & Biggie: Runnin’ (Dying To Live)
Infectious hook & singing on the chorus. Chilling interview excerpt from Biggie on the outro, used to great effect.

*David Bowie: Life On Mars
A classic. Trying to memorize the words for my ukulele set.

*Alison Young: Satellite
I met Alison the first time I played Paris, we ended up singing Honky Tonk Women together. This is my favorite song of hers. See her perform it here:

*Notorious B.I.G: Things Done Changed
Riveting track from his debut, Ready To Die (’94). Still sounds fresh & relevant. Remarkable eye for detail & a biting sense of humor paints his best work.

RECOMMENDING:
*Galloway grilling the Senate
This didn’t make it on most US cable or network news outlets, so have a look. He took the words right out of my mouth.

READING:
*Iraq: The War We Are Not Being Shown
www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/featuredposts.html#a004462

I’m still amazed (& disappointed) at how thoroughly sanitized the Iraq war coverage is in mainstream US news (what limited coverage there is at that). I have friends over there & have spoken w/reporters who’ve recently been there. Many troops do feel they’re forgotten back here in the US & that the war is some remote afterthought for most Americans.

WILL BE MISSING:
*Tedy Bruschi: New England Patriots
The defensive captain and linebacker for the Patriots, is not only a legend on the team but the heart & soul of defense itself. He’ll not be playing this year as he recovers from a mild stroke suffered just 10 days after winning Super Bowl XXXIX (at the ripe old age of 31). I’ve been truly inspired by his play & sportsmanship over the years and will surely miss that inspiration come this NFL season. Here’s hoping Tedy’s able to make a complete recovery.
