LISTENING TO:

*The Bee Gees: How Deep Is Your Love
How many classics has Barry Gibb written? Dozens, I reckon. I’ve always been a fan of the Bee Gees, especially the stuff they did after they moved to Miami and started incorporating that R&B flavor to their Brit-pop sound, which I suppose became the forerunner to disco music.

*Stephen Grappelli: Jeanne [Les Valseuses]
From the soundtrack of one of my all-time favorite movies, Les Valseuses (1974) starring Gerard Depardieu. In the US the title is usually “Going Places”.

SET LIST & NOTES FROM 11/15 SHOW:

I Hate New Strings

UB&G
Nov 15, 2005

The set started off kinda quietly, though things livened up by the end. Always interesting reactions when I bust out some Snoop. Plenty of folks singing along on the chorus. I always forget how famous that tune is and how many folks know it & dig it. Only casualty was my “A” string on the end of “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” I was just about done w/my set anyway, so no tragedy, but I must confess I hate new strings. I really do. Probably even more so on an acoustic than on an electric. The A string that died & the other five that will go with it were nicely aged, deep & rich in tone. They’ve been on for years. They’ve done shows in LA, NYC, Texas, Paris, Liverpool… Farewell, old friends. New strings sound so brash, bright and clean. No maturity or character. I think of strings as a fine vintage wine. They get better with age. Forget strings “dying”. I love dead strings. Though there has to be some care involved. Nothings worse than unused, rusted strings, but I digress. Next day, took a deep breath & changed all the strings to a new set. I guess it was time.

Set Notes 11/29/05 @ UBG -

Quote of nite:

Random cool incident of the nite: Some patron dropping five bucks at the foot of the stage on his way out. Love when that happens.

Quote of the nite: “Do you play at Largo?”

“No. They won’t have me”

“That’s crazy. I’ll get you in there.”

Hilarious…

Cool to have an extended set, as Carol-Ann had the nite off and I could play into her set time. A couple guys there were asking me why I don’t play Largo and I was telling them, Largo won’t touch me with a 10 foot pole. It’s kinda funny, I do get asked that question on a regular basis. Also, same thing with KCRW. Anyway, the set ended w/a request by the guys from Delarosa (the band that plays a good set in the 10:30 slot every Tues). They wanted to hear the Oasis b-side “Talk Tonite”, (which has been in & out of my set for years). I managed to remember all the lyrics & the boys from Delarosa were singing harmonies (from the bar) at the end of the tune. It was all good. Visit Delarosa online here: www.delarosamusic.com

On a technical note: I was playing my “Kay” guitar (the one in the “Good To Know” video & on the cover of “Good Luck Stranger”), since my Martin’s pickup went down the previous week. The Kay is a cool looking, inexpensive vintage guitar and sounded pretty good, though not nearly as forgiving to play compared to my Martin. But it was good to have it out for the nite as I hadn’t gigged with it in years.

Set list:

Half The World Away (Oasis cover)

Come Along & Thrill Us

The Outdoor Type (Lemonheads cover)

Ordinary Song (request)

Streets Of Spain

Girl (request/Beatles cover)

Jimmy Jazz (Clash cover)

Sunday Shining

Good To Know

Waymore’s Blues (Waylon Jennings cover)

Drunk With You

Ace Of Spades (request/Motorhead cover)

You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away (request/Beatles cover)

All I Have To Do Is Dream (request/Everly Brothers cover)

Walk On The Wildside (Lou Reed cover/incomplete)

Underneath The Sky (Oasis cover)

Talk Tonite (request/encore/Oasis cover)

Set Notes
UBG – Dec 05, 2005

Craggy Voice Set

For some reason, it took my voice like 5 songs to get warmed up. Very unusual. Perhaps it was the ice in the water, the airline trip from Mexico, vacation? Anyway, despite a craggy & slightly pitchy start, things started to get groovy about 6 songs into the set.

Set List:

Drunk With You

Come Along & Thrill Us

Psycho (request/Leon Payne cover)

Save Yer Love 4 Me

Girl (Beatles cover)

Wish I Knew

Things Have Changed (Bob Dylan cover)

Hello (request/Oasis cover)

Good To Know

Don’t Look Back In Anger (request/Oasis cover)
