Requests & Covers, Fiddy, Galloway, Hitchens & T.O.

If you’re in the hood on Tuesday, drop by. I’ll be strumming up (& picking out) some tunes, requests & covers, at my weekly engagement at the UBG on the banks of the mighty LA River.

Tues, Nov 15
Universal Bar & Grill – 8:30PM (my set)
4093 Lankershim Blvd (at Cahuenga)
N. Hollywood, CA. 91602
818-766-2114

LISTENING TO:

*Steve Earle: Good Ol’ Boy (Gettin' Tough)
“It’s getting tough, just my luck - I was born in the land of plenty now there ain’t enough.”

*50 Cent: A Baltimore Love Thing
“I made you feel good, but now you try & treat it like a fling – but what we have is more sacred than a vow or a ring. You broke my heart & I won’t forget what you did – If you give birth I’ll already be in love with your kid.”

Dressed up like a love song, but you soon realize 50 is speaking on behalf of heroin. Compelling stuff. Fiddy remains on top of his game.

*The Redwalls: Hung Up On The Way I’m Feeling
Mellow out, Abbey Road style via Chicago. Did you catch ‘em on Leno the other week?

SET LIST & NOTES FROM LAST WEEK’S SHOW:

UB&G
Nov 08, 2005

Good crowd again. Steven Wilson of Plasticsoul dropped by and supplied a few requests. (On a sidenote, I think when Steven performs solo as Plasticsoul, he should change the spelling to Plasticsole. That would be cool & informative). I wore my Patriots jersey to honor Tom Brady’s performance on Monday Nite Football, despite the loss. Also sold some CDs, so that was cool.

QUOTE:

“I am demanding prosecution, I am begging for prosecution…Charge me and I will head for the airport right now and face them down in court as I faced them down in the Senate room. Because I publicly humiliated this lickspittle Senator Norman Coleman—one of Bush’s right-hand men—in the US Senate in May, this sneak revenge attack has been launched over the past 24 hours.”

MP George Galloway, on recent charges of perjury brought against him. I kinda hope he does return as he put it to the Senate subcommittee in a most impressive way this past summer. If you missed him then, see it here:

BUH-BYE:
*Terrell Owens, Philadelphia Eagles

A great talent. A terrible cancer to any team. I was pretty surprised the Eagles took a gamble with him last year, thinking somehow he would act differently in their organization. I was even more surprised that they didn’t suspend him much earlier this year, before things got even worse, because any discerning viewer knew things weren’t going to get better. Perhaps he should play basketball, as he said he likes that better than football. Plus it’s not the ultimate team sport, which is exactly what football is, so perhaps he’d be a better fit. But I’ll miss his imaginative, entertaining TD celebrations, the pom-poms one being my favorite.

SPOTTED AT THE CEDAR TAVERN (NYC):
Kissinger nemesis & Vanity Fair conservative contributor, Christopher Hitchens. Drinking whiskey, “neat” of course.

I Hate New Strings

UB&G
Nov 15, 2005

The set started off kinda quietly, though things livened up by the end. Always interesting reactions when I bust out some Snoop. Plenty of folks singing along on the chorus. I always forget how famous that tune is and how many folks know it & dig it. Only casualty was my “A” string on the end of “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” I was just about done w/my set anyway, so no tragedy, but I must confess I hate new strings. I really do. Probably even more so on an acoustic than on an electric. The A string that died & the other five that will go with it were nicely aged, deep & rich in tone. They’ve been on for years. They’ve done shows in LA, NYC, Texas, Paris, Liverpool… Farewell, old friends. New strings sound so brash, bright and clean. No maturity or character. I think of strings as a fine vintage wine. They get better with age. Forget strings “dying”. I love dead strings. Though there has to be some care involved. Nothings worse than unused, rusted strings, but I digress. Next day, took a deep breath & changed all the strings to a new set. I guess it was time.

"The Set That Almost Wasn’t"

As I was setting up to play my set, I realized the active pickup in my Martin had gone down. Perhaps a curse from playing a set on the anniversary of the JFK assassination… Luckily, despite this technical sabotage, I was able to proceed (thanks to a leftover mic from Kelly-Ann) with a makeshift setup (directly miking the acoustic) and an abbreviated set (due to the late start trying to troubleshoot my way out of this dealio plaza.)

Set list:

Drunk With You

Underneath The Sky (Oasis cover)

Girl (Beatles cover)

Good To Know (request)

Ordinary Song

Tea (Brendan Benson cover)

Ace Of Spades (Motorhead cover)

Half The World Away (Oasis cover)
