LISTENING TO:

*John Lennon: Mind Games
Go ahead, put your soul power to the karmac wheel.

*Hurricane Smith: Oh Babe, What Would You Say?
Is there a more nostalgia evoking tune?

*The Cure: Lullaby
Trance-goth-pop for the whole family. Pass the lipstick.

*Danny O’Keefe: Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues
Often covered by the likes of Willie, Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Rich, et al, this hit version by the songwriter himself is my favorite. Heck, this version of his own song is really a cover version in a way, since a non-hit, sub-par version (w/flutes!) of “Good Time Charlie” appeared on his debut record, little over one year before he re-recorded it & included it on his second album.

*Tupac & Biggie: Runnin’ (Dying To Live)
Infectious hook & singing on the chorus. Chilling interview excerpt from Biggie on the outro, used to great effect.

“The manhandling of journalists accompanying Ms. Rice (in Darfur) got more coverage than any massacre in Darfur has.”

*Galloway grilling the Senate
This didn’t make it on most US cable or network news outlets, so have a look. He took the words right out of my mouth. www.informationclearinghouse.info/article8866.htm

READING:
*All Ears for Tom Cruise, All Eyes on Brad Pitt
by Nicholas Kristof, NY Times
www.nytimes.com/2005/07/26/opinion/26kristof.html

“ABC News had a total of 18 minutes of the Darfur genocide in its nightly newscasts all last year - and that turns out to be a credit to Peter Jennings. NBC had only 5 minutes of coverage all last year, and CBS only 3 minutes - about a minute of coverage for every 100,000 deaths. In contrast, Martha Stewart received 130 minutes of coverage by the three networks.”

+ + + + + + + + +

WILL BE MISSING:
*Ted Johnson: New England Patriots
Another week, another key departure from the New England linebacker position. Last week it was Tedy Bruschi, this week another Ted: Ted Johnson (#52). As if this season wasn’t gonna be challenging enough after the loss of Offensive & Defensive co-ordinators Weis & Crennel.

I may do some more ukulele stuff as well.
Thanks to all who made it by last week.

Oh, yeah. Some pics online here from last show….(Thanks, Stephanie!)

*Tupac & Biggie: Runnin’ (Dying To Live)
Infectious hook & singing on the chorus. Chilling interview excerpt from Biggie on the outro, used to great effect.

*David Bowie: Life On Mars
A classic. Trying to memorize the words for my ukulele set.

*Alison Young: Satellite
I met Alison the first time I played Paris, we ended up singing Honky Tonk Women together. This is my favorite song of hers. See her perform it here:
www.ukuleledisco.com/satellite

*Notorious B.I.G: Things Done Changed
Riveting track from his debut, Ready To Die (’94). Still sounds fresh & relevant. Remarkable eye for detail & a biting sense of humor paints his best work.

READING:
*Iraq: The War We Are Not Being Shown
www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/featuredposts.html#a004462

I’m still amazed (& disappointed) at how thoroughly sanitized the Iraq war coverage is in mainstream US news (what limited coverage there is at that). I have friends over there & have spoken w/reporters who’ve recently been there. Many troops do feel they’re forgotten back here in the US & that the war is some remote afterthought for most Americans.

+ + + + + + + + +

WILL BE MISSING:
*Tedy Bruschi: New England Patriots
The defensive captain and linebacker for the Patriots, is not only a legend on the team but the heart & soul of defense itself. He’ll not be playing this year as he recovers from a mild stroke suffered just 10 days after winning Super Bowl XXXIX (at the ripe old age of 31). I’ve been truly inspired by his play & sportsmanship over the years and will surely miss that inspiration come this NFL season. Here’s hoping Tedy’s able to make a complete recovery.

Show THIS Tuesday @ UB&G

Hey Everybody,

I’m playing a free show this Tuesday nite at that sturdy dive-bar called the Universal Bar & Grill, which is located on the banks of the mighty LA River. I’ll be playing a set @ 8:30 just before the lovely & talented Carol-Ann Plante takes the stage @ 9:30.

LISTENING TO:

*Alison Young: Satellite
I met Alison the first time I played Paris, we ended up singing Honky Tonk Women together. This is my favorite song of hers. See her perform it here:
www.ukuleledisco.com/satellite

*Bright Eyes: When The President Talks To God
A humorous & caustic rumination on W’s self-proclaimed religiosity. Conor keeps the necessary artistic distance for maximum focus & aim, and only loses it on the last verse. It’s available for free download on i-Tunes. Leno performance & lyrics can be found here:
www.thestoryinthesoil.com/home.html

*Notorious B.I.G: Things Done Changed
Riveting track from his debut, Ready To Die (’94). Still sounds fresh & relevant. Remarkable eye for detail & a biting sense of humor paints his best work.

*Mary J Blige: What’s the 411? (remix)
Found this remix of the old ‘90s classic on i-Tunes. Mary’s great, but Biggie just about steals the show w/his intro verse. A treat.

*The Redwalls: Falling Down
Defiant response to FCC’s recent nonsense. A call to arms to other artists, delivered in a throaty, Lennonesque-’65 croak. It’s the Mersey sound updated.

Hey Everyone,

I’m playing a show this Saturday nite, supporting my
good friend Eddy Sill’s band The Popravinas. It’s in
Studio City & it’s free. I might be at the Lebanese
restaurant called Cedar House (a few doors down)
before the show, so if I’m not at the Suites, check
there. And plan to stay on for the Popravina’s.
They’re a rockin’ pop band, w/a little country &
Westerberg.

LISTENING TO:

*Plasticsoul: Pictures From The Long Ago
I’ve written about Steven’s stuff here before. Well,
now the record is done & is available. Very
impressive debut. It sounds old-fashioned, it sounds
modern. It’s Pictures From The Long Ago. Have
yerself a listen right away, don’t delay.

*Elliott Smith: From A Basement On The Hill
Plenty of first rate stuff on this swansong.

*Ludwig Van Beethoven: Moonlight Sonata (Mancini &
Horowitz versions)
Always hauntingly beautiful. Used well in the motion
picture “Ray”.

*The Redwalls: Falling Down
Defiant response to FCC’s recent nonsense. A call to
arms to other artists, delivered in a throaty,
Lennonesque-’65 croak. It’s the Mersey sound updated.

*The Game: Dreams
Compelling, irresistible track that grooves. Dr.
Dre’s production always distinctive, memorable &
inspiring.

(Emitt Rhodes cover story in LA City Beat)

As some of you may know, my last record “Lone Star”
was dedicated to Emitt Rhodes. This is a well written
article, if somewhat depressing, on what Emitt is up
to these days. Check it out. Here’s hoping he can
record & release a new record and move forward with
his life. Not sure how I missed this article back
in January, but thanks to Dale Marks for bringing it
to my attention. Seek out Emitt’s solo work, esp the
compilation: “Daisy Fresh from Hawthorne, CA: Best of
the Dunhill Years”.
