Got tipped a hundred dollar bill after playing Snoop Dogg's "Who Am I (What's My Name?)" at the UBG last June. Some dude named "Patrice" came up to the stage afterwards and said a few brief kind words and stuck his hand out. As we shook hands, I felt a bit of paper in his hand, like some illegal transaction, y'know? After he walked away, I thought, Wow, he just tipped me some cash, maybe a fiver or a ten! I was shocked when I opened my palm to see a Benjamin looking back at me! Awesome.

After packing up my gear, I wanted to thank "Patrice" for his generosity. I noticed he was walking out the door. I yelled "Thanks alot, Patrice". He nodded and said "My cousin woulda loved that" and walked out the door.

Well, thanks again, Patrice, whoever you are. And whoever your cousin is!

Pictured is me at the Cock and Bull in Venice the following weekend proudly displaying the jack.

"Harold" - The Movie

As some of you know, I did the music for my friend T. Sean Shannon's feature film directorial debut called "Harold". It's a comedy starring Spencer Breslin, Cuba Gooding, Jr, Ally Sheedy, Nikki Blonsky and a strong supporting cast that includes Fred Willard, Chris Parnell & Colin Quinn.

The star of the film, Spencer Breslin, will be on the Tonight Show w/Jay Leno tomorrow (WED), June 11th. He'll be discussing the movie and I hear they're showing a clip, so tune in if you can.

"Harold" opens next month on July 11th in NY & LA.

They just put together a trailer for it. Please enjoy...

The opening cinema vignette cracks me up. The rest is so Brit, so “Albion”.

Can’t recommend the Supergrass video, though. The singer grew a beard & mustache and now looks like Jack Black. Besides, the video didn’t really lend itself to the subtle hauntings of an old Eastern European city, which the song coughs up in droves.

And for anyone who missed it, 2 years ago I was recommending the song/video for “For Lovers” by Wolfman & Pete Doherty (of Babyshambles). Has Pete been strung-out for the last 2 years or so? No doubt. But he’s been a hopeless romantic for longer than that, as this tune reveals.

I saw & met 3 different pugs on the way to the Post Office this morning. That’s 3 pugs in less than 7/10ths of a mile! 2 were black (my favorite, hence my studio’s name BlackPug Studios). First was a young little runt by Bob Hope’s old house, named “Way-Lay” (sp?). The other 2 were older, senior pugs, one black, one fawn, tied up outside the Post Office waiting for their master to come outside.

Notes: The Martin guitar went down *again* after playing beautifully on Tues. Luckily Joyce’s car was there so I could make an emergency run home for the ever-faithful Kay. So once again, the Kay saves the day. The return of the Kay, pt III. Fighting a cold and some PA problems only added to the stress. My voice held out throughout and the set went alright, but I was glad to be on the other side of it once it was over. aka Orange Bowl Forever Show

Good crowd. Lotsa familiar faces. Some unfamiliar ones, too…Orange Bowl was on (already overtime 1 or 2) by the time I took the stage. The overtimes kept piling up and lasted through my set & into Carol-Anne’s. Penn State ultimately got tired of extra periods and decided to end the suspense (& viewer fatigue) and went ahead and kicked a field goal, putting Florida State out of their prolonged misery. I don’t really follow NCAAF, but I couldn’t help noticing the Penn State coach, Joe Paterno, a sort of Columbo-esque character on the sideline, leading his team (the long way) to victory.

Cool to have an extended set, as Carol-Ann had the nite off and I could play into her set time. A couple guys there were asking me why I don’t play Largo and I was telling them, Largo won’t touch me with a 10 foot pole. It’s kinda funny, I do get asked that question on a regular basis. Also, same thing with KCRW. Anyway, the set ended w/a request by the guys from Delarosa (the band that plays the 10:30 slot every Tues). They wanted to hear the Oasis b-side “Talk Tonite”, (which has been in & out of my set for years). I managed to remember all the lyrics & the boys from Delarosa were singing harmonies (from the bar) at the end of the tune. It was all good. Visit Delarosa online here: www.delarosamusic.com

On a technical note: I was playing my “Kay” guitar (the one in the “Good To Know” video & on the cover of “Good Luck Stranger”), since my Martin’s pickup went down the previous week. The Kay is a cool looking, inexpensive vintage guitar and sounded pretty good, though not nearly as forgiving to play compared to my Martin. But it was good to have it out for the nite as I hadn’t gigged with it in years.

My good friend Clive, a true Londoner, who lets me crash at his Muswell Hill flat, wouldn’t let me leave without this book on my summer visit to the UK to do the IPO show in Liverpool. The set started off kinda quietly, though things livened up by the end. Always interesting reactions when I bust out some Snoop. Plenty of folks singing along on the chorus. I always forget how famous that tune is and how many folks know it & dig it. Only casualty was my “A” string on the end of “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?” I was just about done w/my set anyway, so no tragedy, but I must confess I hate new strings. I really do. Probably even more so on an acoustic than on an electric. The A string that died & the other five that will go with it were nicely aged, deep & rich in tone. They’ve been on for years. They’ve done shows in LA, NYC, Texas, Paris, Liverpool… Farewell, old friends. New strings sound so brash, bright and clean. No maturity or character. I think of strings as a fine vintage wine. They get better with age. Forget strings “dying”. I love dead strings. Though there has to be some care involved. Nothings worse than unused, rusted strings, but I digress. Next day, took a deep breath & changed all the strings to a new set. I guess it was time.

A great talent. A terrible cancer to any team. I was pretty surprised the Eagles took a gamble with him last year, thinking somehow he would act differently in their organization. I was even more surprised that they didn’t suspend him much earlier this year, before things got even worse, because any discerning viewer knew things weren’t going to get better. Perhaps he should play basketball, as he said he likes that better than football. Plus it’s not the ultimate team sport, which is exactly what football is, so perhaps he’d be a better fit. But I’ll miss his imaginative, entertaining TD celebrations, the pom-poms one being my favorite.

As I wrote about in this very space a few months back, Tedy was out for the season because of a mild stroke he suffered days after winning the Superbowl. Well, thanks to a speedier recovery than anyone expected, he was cleared fully by his doctors to return to the practice field, which he did this past Wednesday. Tedy is special player. Often covered by the likes of Willie, Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Rich, et al, this hit version by the songwriter himself is my favorite. Heck, this version of his own song is really a cover version in a way, since a non-hit, sub-par version (w/flutes!) of “Good Time Charlie” appeared on his debut record, little over one year before he re-recorded it & included it on his second album.
